Cody and his dad were flown to Salt Lake City very late Monday night because Cody was running a fever. His mom, Janae, drove up the next day to meet them there. Cody's counts were also really low, which they were expecting he would need a transfusion on Tuesday anyway. He was given a blood transfusion and a platelet transfusion when he first reached Salt Lake and they drew some blood cultures from his central line to test for an infection. It took a few days for the labs to come back and when they did they were positive, so he does have an infection. They started him on antibiotics in Winnemucca before shipping him to Salt Lake just as a precaution until they got the cultures back. They had to wait for the cultures to come back to find out what type of infection he had so they would know which antibiotic would work best to treat it. They were in the hospital in Salt Lake until Friday evening when they were finally discharged to go home.
While in the hospital over the course of the week Cody received 4 units of blood and 3 units of platelets as well as antibiotics. He will need to be on IV Antibiotics every 8 hours for 10 days. He will be doing the rest from home. Cody is more susceptible to infection now that he is getting chemo. We all carry bacteria and germs on our bodies that our immune system normally can handle so we don't get sick. Since Cody's counts drop so low a week after chemo his body isn't able to fight off some of those "normal" germs which can cause him to become sick or get an infection.
Cody is doing good and is feeling quite well considering. Now that he has received his blood transfusions he is feeling a lot better and not quite as tired. He still tires easily and some days are better than others but for now Cody is home until the next round of chemo.
